Hi all , I'm Mik Wood aka Woody.. I'm the Essex rep for the Ride of Respct team .. I'm looking to join the USR, and I'm also looking for USR riders in my area to help with charity rides out and next years Essex ride of Respect.. I have also got a group of mates that helped with the marshaling on this years Essex RoR and would like them to get trained in marshaling for next years ride.. Any help would be greatfull as I'm not to positive on what to do now lol.. Woody

Hi I am Nigel Unsworth I live in Winchester, only just round to signing up to this forum. I am a member of SERV Wessex region.. and Solent Advanced Motorcyclists. Enjoyed the slow riding at Borden, also had a good day at Round the Harbours cycle marshalling yesterday. on a side note, at the end of the day I had quite a chat With a guy from the British heart foundation called Martin, he was very pleased with the support he received from us and the static marshals. A lot of the cyclists told him that they found our presence very reassuring and when assistance needed we were very helpful. So that sounds like a pat on the back for us. I will be attending the ROR next week so looking forward to meeting new faces.

I heard of this group through the FB page on the M25 poppy ride (which intrigued me straight away and will attend). I just wanted to learn a bit more and see if I can be of any help even though with 2 small children I don't have bucket loads of free time (I wish). I ride with others from the forum Kent and Sussex bikers as much as i can, which I enjoy. Nice to do something other than just getting to and from work.
I must admit though I believe I might be a little under qualified :-\. Was curioys what SERV that most people seem to be members of, stands for?

Hi there and welcome SERV stands for service by emergency rider volunteers aka Blood Bikers. we deliver blood and plasma etc to hospitals at night and weekends. :)

About Me: Well now I've joined the group I guess I'd better introduce myself.
Born again biker comes to mind ........ passed my test back in the day when "gay" meant happy and Triumph was a British bike (no I'm not and yes that long ago).
Got back into bikes a couple of years ago and rather than go out and kill myself on a "1000cc Kamawaker jingjong" decided to build up to a big bike slowly. So got myself a 50cc AJS Regal Raptor. Sold that after a little while (like when I got overtaken by mobility scooters) and moved up to a 125 Cruiser (Pioneer Nevada). It's cheap, reliable and is only meant as a stepping stone... Next year I'm hoping to move up to a Deauville (2nd hand of course) and will probably stick with that. Not into these street racer type bikes, I know that I couldn't handle the power and the very thought of going 140+ on two wheels terrifies me. (4 wheels? any day of the week )
If you've read this far you probably need to do something with your life! No! seriously, you've probably gathered that I don't take myself too seriously. I've got work for that (Information Security and Data Protection Consultant - yes it's really that boring).
Apart from the bike my other main hobby is I'm a semi pro magician. No I can't make something disappear, I can cut people in half (I just gotta finish the course so I learn how to put them back together).

About my Ride (07 - Pioneer Nevada 125):Okay, so here's what I've done with her since I got her (apart from servicing):
Upgraded the spark plug (iridium),
replaced the chain,
upped the sprockets to 16t front and 38t rear (I did go up to 17t front but, to all intents and purposes, lost 5th gear).
Replaced the pathetic horn with a pair of 110Db air horns :-D
Changed the side lights to LED Headlights. The original lights were 10w sides and 30/35w main. Now I have 30w equivalent sides and upped the main to a 40/45w. (had to 'shoehorn' the aftermarket visors into the sidelights.
Had a rack and top box put on her. Had to lose the sissy bar but considering putting that back on and shifting the box back a tad (how far is a "tad" exactly?)
Replaced the voltmeter. and put pretty little 'fanned aces' stickers on each side of the tank.
What can I bring to the USRs? Well, I spent ten years in the Royal Signals and sixteen years in the Fire Service and am bit of a 'geek' (well an excel whore to be honest) and can touch type. I'm not IAM, RoSPA or any of those other things, so I'm guessing, the most likely, readily available, skill I can bring to the USRs is to offer support on the comms side. Some time ago, for someone, I set up an excel spreadsheet that acted as a real-time log for all comms. (promotes good radio procedure and brevity!) basically, I touched type the comms in real time and, as the 'enter' button was hit it automatically inserted the system time. Worked well :-) Well that's me and I'll be speaking to that awfully nice Mr Riz after the festivities to see if I can bring any added value and support to the USRs :-)
thats quite some intro, magic man! Nice to see another ex serviceman :) id did some comms in the CRE, but not anywhere close to what the RCS monkey's would have been doing! Definitely need to hook you up with Riz and Stem to get some comm's brains together

Hi everyone,
Being the newest Noobie/Beginner (delete as appropriate), I thought it best to introduce myself. I was the "Young" officer who hosted the training day at Bordon and I was so impressed with you setup and outlook that I decided to join the team. I have also joined the IAM and had my first Observed Ride with the Wey Valley Advanced Motorcycle Club ( it was a huge eye opener and I learnt a great deal in just one morning). Next I am off to Surrey Police for a Bike Safe day.
A bit about me - I have been riding for about 8 years and currently own a Yamaha XJ900 Diversion, luckily its that old that I don't mind dropping it. However I am in the process (or should that be cajoling/influencing my wife) of buying a newer model - would love to hear feedback on Sport Touring models.
I have been in the Army for 29 years and I will eventually leave the forces on June 2015 when I will be classed as too old! I have served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers who fix, maintain and repair all equipment's in the Army (Imagine the AA or the RAC with a gun). That's enough about me and I look forward to meeting you all very soon.

Welcome Geordie, was good to meet you and thanks for all your work at Bordon. I have been supplying you (REME) with kit to support your work for the past 20 years some of which you know only too well!
As for sports tourers, I would always recommend Honda for reliability and then is depends on money, intended use, leg length, and how mechanically minded you are which being REME I guess you won't mind doing a bit of tinkering, self servicing.

My name is Charles May and I have just passed my RoSPA test, thanks to my observer and fellow USR member Steve Hyde (USR54, ymfb on here).
I currently volunteer with Wessex 4x4 Response but as we normally only deploy during the winter months I have been looking for something similar that will get me out on the bike more during the rest of the year.
My current ride is a Triumph ST 1050 and hopefully I can make myself useful!

I've been in touch with Chris and have signed up with USR. Really looking forward to helping out as much as possible (and as work allows :( [size=78%])[/size]
Currently riding a Triumph Tiger, that needs a bit of TLC after a stupid topple over after my foot slipped on some oil at a junction. Last weekend I had a jolly through France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. Fortunately, foreign speak for 'can you help me lift my bike up' is pretty universal!
It would be great to meet up with an experienced USR member for a chat. I think Chris was going to point someone in my direction, but if anyone is nearby (Maidstone, Kent) it'd be great to meet up.
I've got Zello and Traccar setup on my phone & headset, so now need to look at some advanced training. I think the ERS looks best for me - does anyone know of a good ERS trainer in the Maidstone ish area?

Unlike a lot of people here, I don't ride for Serv. I'm not sure I'd be compus at work the next day! I don't know how you do it. As age creeps along, so my nights sleep seem to become more erratic, so perhaps it isn't as bad as I imagine.
I'm looking forward to accompanying some of you as I hopefully progress from associate to having an assigned number.

I'm due to start work with east of England ambulance service shortly and train as a technician.

Bill, to join us on the road you need to hold or have a commitment to obtain an advanced rider qualification (e.g. IAM or RoSPA). From there you are inducted (it's not painful) as an associate rider. After having participated in a number of events where you will be assessed, undertaken a FBoS (or equivalent) first aid course and a USR training day, if deemed suitable you are elevated to full USR status.
Then when you've joined us, you're fair game and your problems really start ;-)

Need to get USB wired into bike for charge lead or a 12v outlet I can plug adapter into. Not got around to it yet :(
Also, just done the rubber on bike - noticed my right fork is leaking ! Have bits to do them apart from seal driver for 43mm forks ! Was going to change the oil and seals anyway but going to have to try this week now :(
Fork seals all done :) did them for first time today, hope they hold ! :-/ new oil and seals on both.

I'm Jamie, been riding for 5 years on my trusty CBF600 and stuck 60,000 miles on it. Currently doing my IAM and also training to become a CBT and eventually DAS instructor. Looking forward to being able to volunteer with USR and hope to get involved as soon as I can. I don't have any first aid training but am keen to address that however best recommended.
Any pointers on what I would be best doing to get involved would be much appreciated.

There's a couple of toy runs coming up which you are welcome to attend to see how you get on. In the new year I expect there will be a first aid course run so you might be best waiting for that.

Hey All,
I'm Bryan found my love for the tarmac again after quite a few years off it. I ride a Honda NT700.
Currently ride as a volunteer for a few animals charity's in a role I'm told should be described as Roadside Animal Recovery. In short I get called to many deceased and injured domestic animals on the roads where I can stabilize if needed. Most of by work is recovery where I carry Mobile Microchip scanner and can ID at the roadside and transport and reunite with there owners for closure.
I was off the road due to being bitten by the Devil that is PTSD and Anxiety and although i will never be rid of these demons i have found that I can channel the overactive mind into logical problem solving and crisis management.
Currently working towards my IAM and also started training as a CFR (community first responder) although they are not yet too convinced about using a bike in this role, i will change their minds I'm sure and where is a better place for a mobile defibrillator then on a motorcycle in our built up areas.
Look forward to meet you all, although deep inside I will be nervous as hell the first time...
Humor - well it's a bit dark to be honest but i have been told that its key requirement in USR's.
Welcome Bryan, your work with the animal charities sounds very interesting and I can see your point about transporting a defib on a bike for the CFRs, it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

Wow oddbins was a while back. Used to get me a packet of Branigans Beef and Mustard crisps and cider for an evening in the park.

The bike certainly stands out and the concept is not one I've come across before but I can see the need for it. I'm sure its appreciated by the owners of the pets you recover although it must be very emotional at times as well. Hopefully the USR jobs will be a bit of light relief!

Just I should probably introduce myself as I'm out tomorrow with everyone. I've been riding since i was 16 (37 now) although I had an 8 year gap in between where I bought a campervan for some reason and couldn't justify both that and the bike to the misses. Since having kids the camper wasn't big enough so sold that, bought a trailer and a bigger tent and then an old F650 to get back into biking. I did my BikeSafe course on that and then bought myself a Tiger 800XC and proceeded to do my RoSPA which I passed in September. A few weeks ago I was in Ireland doing my WEMT with WEMSI and decided I really wanted to give something back, local SAR in the area isn't massively active and I saw the USR and sent an email off straight away.
Anyway enough of me rambling. Hopefully see some of you tomorrow for the BHF ride.

Welcome to the forum and the group. Its a complete coincidence but with another hat on I was staying in Bideford on Friday and Saturday just gone, it was a tour organised by the Bellringing Motorcyclists and we had a fantastic time. You certainly live in a beautiful area and lovely town!
Back to the USRs and I hope to meet you soon at a future event. Currently most of what we do is based around the London/SE area but we are slowly spreading further west and who knows, may start to get some more events in the South West as numbers grow in this area.
